The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality.”—George Bernard Shaw

There are two histories and two archaeologies of the ancient Levant region between the years of 450 BC and 300 BC: one by those of faith who start with the biblical account and the other by those who demand external evidence before giving any credance to that found in the OT (Old Testament). If one holds to the principle of consistancy, then one must demand of the Hebrews (and Christians) what is demanded of the ancient accounts of the Greeks, Romans, Franks, people of the Indian subcontinent, and other ancient civilizations who have put in historical dressings their prehistoric legends and legends from historic times that were set down generations later. Finding the bible to be the work of men without divine inspiration, I hold both the Hebrews to the requirements of evidence and reasonable inference. It is the old conflict of reason and faith, and I being trained both in philosophy and science have chosen the side of reason.

Several articles bridge both new and old testaments.  One lists the contradictions in the Bible..  Another is on the Bibles themselves:  their variations, sources, transmission, and modifications.  A third is on the process of becoming canon.

.  For those wishing to be entertained on the topic of Christian faith, there are Mark Twain's best satire, and there are the illustrated brotherhood of religions and where is god's son?  Concise is the list of the basic reasons to be without religion.  On the issue of post-death existence are works by John Stuart Mills and Lucretius the Roman Epicurean.  In a passage that merits reading for its conciseness and clarity, John Stuart Mills explains his father’s opposition to religion for its being the greatest of evils and the results of these evils are describe in James Haught’s Holly Horror.

With Jehovah at the helm every disaster, every death has at least His approving nod.  On Lisbon earthquake, Voltaire found irony in the two-different causes for the quake which brought down the great cathedral during Sunday worship:  Protestant preachers blamed it on His displeasure with Catholicism, and the Catholic priests on their allowing the Jews to live in their city.  Randy Newman put the same to music:  “I make the babies cry, and the old folks die.  You must be a fool to chase around this desert for me!”  There is no fool like a religious fool.  Those who piloted the 3 airlines on 9/11 are with the virgins, and the most worthy of the proselytizing Jehovah Witnesses are among the 144,000 saved.
