Smut first, then search for Web surfers

 

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Searches for "adult" information accounted for almost one out of five visits to an Internet site last week, according to Hitwise, a California company that tracks Web traffic.

The category totaled 18.8 percent of Web activity, topping visits to Web search engines (13.8 percent), entertainment (8 percent), business and finance (7.4 percent), and classifieds (4 percent).

In the search engine category, Google was the most popular. It drew 2.7 percent of all Web visits last week. Yahoo Search was second at 1.7 percent and MSN Search had 1.1 percent
