On Plutonium-239

 

American Scientist, Vol. 95 pgs. 266-8, has in their review of Plutonium:  A History of the World’s Most Dangerous Element, by Jeremy Berstein, Josephyt Henry Press, 2007,  has added some updates

to the information above and other information of interest. 

 

 

Plutonium 239 has a half-life of 24,110 years. 

An atom of uranium 238 absorbs a neutron, will decay within a few days to form plutonium 239

Plutonium 239, since it emits on decay an alpha particle can be safely handled.

Pu-239 toxicity is derived from inhalation, with an LD50 at 5ug/kg.

Unpurified plutonium from a reactor cannot be handled because of the gamma rays

There is 2,000 metric tons of plutonium on earth (man made in nuclear reactors, of course)

The bomb dropped on Nagasaki contained 6 kilograms of which only 1 kilogram fissioned (exploded). 

Including the amount lost in purification, about 8 kilograms is required to make a hydrogen bomb

The 2,000 metric tons could be converted to one quarter million hydrogen bombs.

For plutonium 239 becomes unstable at 20 grams per cubic centimeter.

Plutonium 239 has a density of 16.

Density is increased to 20 by implosion

United States has about 250 tons of plutonium in nuclear weapons, and another 250 purified for use.

Civilian plutonium separation began in the 1960s for use in commercial breeder reactors,

Breeder reactors convert non-chain reacting U-238 into Pu-239

Alpha particles can heat water, thus making PU 238 & 239 suitable for use in nuclear reactors. 

As of now an acceptable design for breeder reactors has not been found. 

Pu-239 is one of 3 fissile material (the others U-235 & 233) used in the production of nuclear weapons.
