The profits of the financial sector are included in the calculation of the GDP.  Thus a burden on the economy is used to falsely inflation the figure used to gage growth of the economy. 

When viewing graphs gauged against GDP (such as trade deficit as percentage of GDP), remember that because of the inclusion of interest payments in GDP, the real percentage is much higher.
